In the video he explains how a student can use ChatGPT to generate feedback and suggestions. The result are good, and you as a student can use this to further develop your text. Using chatbots as personal assistants is predicted to be one of the ways AI is going to change education. It is proven to provide better feedback than other students, is more time-effective than teachers, and has generally been shown to have a positive effect on students.
The prompts used in this video:
1. Can you proofread my text: (copy paste text)
2. What mistakes were corrected?
3. Please give me positive and critical feedback on my writing
4. Please give me an idea on how I could expand on the story
5. What could I do to add better story structure to the writing?
As you will see in this video, this is feedback that teachers only can dream about giving to every single students.
Important! This is still a new technology and it’s not given that the feedback that you receives matches the intentions of the given assignment.
Why are these prompts and AI-output so good and important?
- Can you proofread my text?
As a teacher, I often have limited time to review text in detail. In some cases, I may only be able to read a paragraph or two before moving on to the next student. However, by providing concise feedback in this manner, you can receive more immediate feedback and avoid waiting for the teacher’s attention. This approach may also result in more focused feedback that can help improve your writing. - What mistakes were corrected?
It is important to avoid simply copying the text generated by the AI. Doing so only leads to self-deception and hinders personal growth. The purpose of education is to improve oneself and develop the necessary competencies that society requires for functioning. Therefore, it is crucial to use the feedback provided by the AI as a tool for improvement, rather than taking shortcuts or relying solely on technology. Remember, the ultimate goal is to become a better writer and a more competent individual. - Please give me positive and critical feedback on my writing
As a busy teacher, I sometimes forget to provide positive feedback to my students. While I prioritize offering constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement, it is equally important to acknowledge and reinforce what students are doing well. This prompt is designed to provide both positive and critical feedback to help you improve your writing. Use the positive feedback to validate your skills and gain confidence, while using the constructive criticism to refine your writing and take it to the next level. - Please give me an idea on how I could expand on the story
It is crucial to write a text that is long enough for me as a teacher to evaluate your writing skills. While some students may possess exceptional writing abilities that can be showcased in a shorter text, many students require more text to demonstrate their skills adequately. However, I understand that it can be challenging to expand a story and overcome writer’s block. Therefore, this exercise can be a useful tool for you to practice expanding your ideas and writing longer texts while receiving feedback to help you improve your skills. - What could I do to add better story structure to the writing?
It’s important to have a clear vision of your text when you start writing, but sometimes it’s easy to get carried away and lose sight of your original purpose. In those cases, it can be helpful to get feedback on your text structure, so you can make sure your ideas are organized in a coherent and effective way.
I hope you found this useful and that it provides a constructive way to use AI in your education!
