We acknowledge that some individuals may attempt to use AI for academic dishonesty aka cheating. Therefore, we aim to provide one single article on this page that explains how students can utilize AI to cheat.
From the outset, it is important to note that no AI detection systems will be effective in the long term. This is because the goal of AI is to write with the same quality and diversity as humans, making it challenging to detect AI-generated content. Additionally, the currently available detection systems are relatively easy to bypass.
However, we must caution you. As educators, we are aware of students’ academic standing, and it is rare for a student’s grades to significantly improve from a D to a B in just six months. Thus, we advise you to use these methods at your own risk.
Now, suppose you want to use Chat GPT for cheating without being caught. How can you do it?
ChatGPT generates relatively generic texts, meaning that the structure and language resemble all articles it produces when prompted with “Write an article on topic x”. Moreover, it struggles with sourcing reliable information.
To improve the quality of the generated text, begin by using the appropriate prompt:
“Write an article on topic x at a high school level.”
This will produce an acceptable text, but it may still require some adjustments to meet your needs.
To make the text more convincing to your teacher, there are various methods you can employ. For instance, if you typically make a few errors, you could use the prompt “Write the same text but include x number of typos.”
You can also copy+paste a text you have written before, where you write “Write the article with this linguistic level”
If you implement these prompts, you are well on your way to getting away with cheating.
As previously mentioned, the texts like ChatGPT are a bit generic (similar). You have to do this manually, but it is not a big job. Here we have considered a text about wind turbines to show some of the signs that the text is AI-generated:
Red – remove
Turquoise – example of generic text, rewrite it
Green – add more text, but be aware of the different language the AI will, and you will use.
When adding text, you can also use the “Readproof this text” prompt paragraph by paragraph. Then you will get the same language that the AI uses. A teacher will likely see that it differs from your previous assignments, but they can’t prove it.
If you follow these methods, you will most likely get away with it.
If your teacher still accuses you of cheating, you can ask them to provide evidence to support their claim. However, it is virtually impossible to prove that a student has used AI to cheat.
It is important to note that schools will likely adapt over time and develop task types that cannot be easily solved using AI-generated content. Therefore, it is essential to prioritize genuine learning and skill development rather than relying on shortcuts that may become ineffective in the future.
It’s important to keep in mind that cheating with AI-generated content may cause you to miss out on essential skill development. Although it’s unlikely that you’ll need to use all the topics you learn about in school, the skills you acquire are invaluable. By constructing your own text, you’ll develop essential skills such as reading, writing, sourcing credible information, critical analysis, grit, cognitive training, and more. Cheating with AI may provide a shortcut, but it will not give you the opportunity to train these important skills.
It’s crucial to acknowledge the value of skill development, but we also understand that sometimes in life, you may need to finish a project quickly. However, we encourage you to prioritize academic integrity and ethical behavior whenever possible.
We are men pushing 40, so we are interested in knowing how you use AI to cheat. We will update the page if any good tricks come in.
